Close your eyes and enjoy the delicately placed arpeggios from the piano and sweeping lines from the flute and cello, as they illustrate soft misty rain in a secluded garden.
The smell of wet grass and bark from the nearby gumtree, droplets gently dripping from the leaves of the roses, and spiderwebs glistening.
The Secret Garden belongs to a set of three short works by Sally Greenaway, which were commissioned by Stephanie and Ross Burton for their ‘Ruby’ Wedding Anniversary.
The full set of pieces, titled The Strawberry Thief, brings us a world of birds, gardens and cheeky foxes, written to commemorate 40 years of marriage.
The commissioners, Stephanie and Ross Burton sent the composer, Sally Greenaway, an ‘inspiration book’ of all of their shared ‘favourite things’. Included were photos of English and Australian Gardens, handmade crafts like ceramics and quilting, tapestry patterns by Victorian-era English designer William Morris and little painted illustrations of a young family of foxes.
