The trio of instruments (flute, cello, piano) illustrate a fleeting encounter of an inquisitive bird as it searches for its breakfast! Flitting between the flower beds, taking a dip in the birdbath, the little thief eventually escapes with a strawberry!
The Strawberry Thief belongs to a set of three short works by Sally Greenaway, which were commissioned by Stephanie and Ross Burton for their ‘Ruby’ Wedding Anniversary.
The full set of pieces brings us a world of birds, gardens and cheeky foxes, written to commemorate 40 years of marriage.
The commissioners, Stephanie and Ross Burton sent the composer, Sally Greenaway, an ‘inspiration book’ of all of their shared ‘favourite things’. Included were photos of English and Australian Gardens, handmade crafts like ceramics and quilting, tapestry patterns by Victorian-era English designer William Morris and little painted illustrations of a young family of foxes.
